Lifeguard Training

Participants will receive certificates in Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid and Professional CPR, and AED essentials.

Candidates must attend all course sessions. No make-ups will be offered and no refunds can be given for failing any of the required skills, failing the written test or failing to attend all class sessions.

Prerequisites:

  • 15 years of age on or before the last day of class
  • Attend all classes
  • Swim 300 yards without stopping of the following strokes
    1. 100 yards front crawl (rhythmic breathing and propellant kick)
    2. 100 yards breaststroke (pull, breath, kick and glide sequence)
    3. 100 yards either breaststroke or front crawl
  • Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10lb object, swim the object back 20 yards and exit the pool from the side within 1 min and 40 seconds.

* NOTE: All dates mandatory

Lifeguard Re certification and CPR re certification will be taught on the last day of every Lifeguard Training Course.

(Three classes To Choose From)

Once you have completed the Water Safety Instructor course you will be certified to teach:

  • Learn-To-Swim Levels 1-6
  • Parent and Child Aquatics
  • Water Safety Outreach, which includes:
    -  Basic Water Rescue
    -  Water Safety Presentations
    -  Longfellow’s W.H.A.L.E. Tales

In order to become a Water Safety Instructor you must complete the pre-course skills, attend all classes, participate and be prepared for the four teach-back assignments and score at least an 80% on the final written exam. All class participants must arrive on time, have homework assignments finished and ready for review each day of class and receive feedback from fellow classmates with maturity and an open-mind.

Prerequisites:

  • 16 years of age on or before the last date of the course
  • Complete Fundamentals of Instructor Training or have a current American Red Cross instructor certificate from another course
  • Swim the following skills at a learn-to-swim Level 4
  • Front Crawl-25 yards
  • Back Crawl-25 yards
  • Breaststroke-25 yards
  • Elementary Backstroke-25 yards
  • Sidestroke-25 yards
  • Butterfly-25 yards
  • Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (sculling is allowed
  • Tread water 1 minute

Course Length:

The course is 40 hours long based on 10 students and including Fundamentals of Instructor Training. Participants must complete all 40 hours unless they do not need FIT. If students already have FIT or hold a current instructor card then 34 hours must be completed in order to be eligible for certification.

Lifeguarding for Pool and WaterfrontSMC Lifeguarding
American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding is ideal for lifeguards working at non-surf, open-water environments such as lakes and rivers, as well as traditional pools. The course teaches professionalism, patron and facility surveillance, rescue board techniques, emergency preparedness, and more. This course includes certification for pools.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age of 15
  • Pre-course Swim Test:
    • Swim 550 yards (about 500 meters) continuously.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    • Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4–7 feet of water, resurface and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool.
