Weekly Fitness Tip: Consider Yoga as Part of Your Fitness Routine

Considering a Yoga Class?

There are many different types, each with varying objectives, degrees of physical intensity, and potential benefits. Here’s a quick guide to a range of yoga styles:

HATHA. In the U.S., most styles tend to fall within this category. There are 3 basic elements in hatha yoga: postures, breathing techniques and meditation techniques.

IYENGAR. In this type of yoga, the individual concentrates on the numerous body alignments needed to achieve and hold any one posture.

ASTANGA. A rigorous form of yoga, astanga requires continuous movement between postures, without pausing or rest.

BIKRAM. A sort of “hothouse” approach to yoga, this type of yoga is practiced in a room with the temperature raised. Bikram involves an extensive series of postures that stretch the muscles in a precise sequence. (The increased room temperature is intended to raise body heat even further, in order to make the muscles warmer and easier to stretch.)

With Basil Jones, Creative Director Saw Mill Club Yoga

I’m thiiiinnnkkkkinngg about a ……yoga practice.
Do you know what it is???
+
Your kids are doing it.  Your friends are doing it.  Your parents know more Sanskrit than you do, and you’re still “thinking about it”.  Why all this fuss about “building a yoga practice”?
+
If you’re reading this, you’ve already made the biggest step towards claiming wellness as your own when you made the decision to join Saw Mill Club.  You wanted change, here is your opportunity.  You wanted options, we’re giving them to you, with over 30 yoga/yoga inspired experiences a week in our newly expanded yoga schedule.   You wanted a variety between ease and challenge, as one of my teacher’s famously quoted, “It’s Here Now, Are You?”

New Yoga and Dance Studio at Saw Mill Club

New Yoga and Dance Studio at Saw Mill Club

By Basil Jones, RYT, Creative Director of Yoga Saw Mill Club

Sacred Space.
Wikipedia defines sacred space as, ” being set apart to pursue (or to already have achieved) a sacred state or goal, such as Nirvana. It is often ascribed to people, objects, times, or places.

If it’s been a while since you pushed yourself up off the floor in a chatturanga (yogic push up) or felt the space between your shoulder blades (energetically speaking), it may be time to take that huge leap into the often neglected Self and roll out a yoga mat in the old racquetball court cum yoga studio now known as Studio C.

What might your opened third eye see in studio C? Upon entering, one is greeted with the simple symbol of change, balance, and harmony: a circle. An architectural wall with a 6 foot circular recess, this wall serves as a beautiful focal point and inspiration in your practice. In addition to the beautifully refinished and immaculately maintained hardwood floors, insulated and sound proofed ceilings, a freshly tweaked sound system, quality controllable lighting, and instant command heat/cool thermostats for proper temperatures, the space has one more feature. Or, lack thereof. You won’t any longer find…shoes, dirty mats, cluttered props.

In order to keep the Sacred Space of Studio C the perfect nest to find your Inner Sacred Space, props, mats, shoes, and personal belongings are now housed just outside this lower level studio (just down the hall from the women’s locker rooms) space in cubbies. Please be supportive of one another and of the club’s new policy to keep this space a haven for personal growth and deeper understanding of the traditions of Yoga.
