Family Day at the Emergency Room

Northern Westchester Hospital is pleased to provide an opportunity for children and their families to become familiar with the hospital in a fun and friendly manner outside of a medical visit or emergency. To do this, we are conducting an interactive child-friendly Teddy Bear Clinic designed to help put children at ease when they visit the hospital.

The teddy bear is a symbol of comfort and caring – the Teddy Bear Clinic shows children that the hospital is a caring place where they can receive comfort when they are sick.  The clinic “admits” teddy bears to the hospital.  Each admission receives an ID bracelet, is weighed and measured, and will have their blood pressure taken.  Children can also see various treatments and equipment demonstrated on their bears.

The NWH Teddy Bear Clinic is a positive learning opportunity for children to experience first-hand what might happen if they visit their doctor or the hospital emergency department. We hope that by providing this opportunity to visit the facility meet and learn from our medical experts, that we can soften the fear and anxiety that children may feel when they visit their doctor or hospital.

We would appreciate your assistance in communicating this important educational opportunity to the members of your community and hope you can display the attached information and flyer. One is for print, and the other includes links to NWH so you can forward via email or post to your website and families can simply “click” to register.

The Teddy Bear Clinic is scheduled for Saturday, March 19th from 9 am – 12 noon.

For more information about this event and to take a “virtual tour” of the new NWH Emergency Room, please visit www.nwhER.org.

Speaking of Health – Lower your risk for endometrial cancer

As reported by HemOnc Today, women who exercise at least 150 minutes per week saw their risk for endometrial cancer fall by more than one-third compared with inactive women, according the results of a population-based, case-control study.

Hannah Arem, a doctoral student at Yale School of Public Health, New Haven, Conn., said risk was reduced for women who engaged in moderate-to-vigorous exercise, such as fast-paced walking or certain forms of yoga, regardless of BMI. Arem presented the results during the Ninth Annual AACR Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference.

She told  HemOnc Today that women in the study experienced a dose response related to exercise.

“The greatest reduction in risk occurred in women who went from no exercise to some exercise,” Arem said. “As the women exercised more, the greater the decrease in risk became.”
