Melissa has a few words of gratitude for our makeover sponsors:
Joseph J. Sozio, MD and the staff of SkinCentre Advanced Medical Aesthetics: Total strangers stop me in the street and ask about my glowing and radiant skin! Today, so many women look overdone with too many procedures. It was a relief to discover that your practice is dedicated to subtly enhancing natural beauty. Since moving to New York many years ago, I’ve been searching for such a place as amazing as the SkinCentre. I’m glad to have found you!
Mervyn Tugendhaft and Jennie Hendricks, personal trainers, Saw Mill Club: You have transformed my body. Your “tough love” and dedication to making my workouts successful will never be forgotten. I’m excited to continue working with both of you and to hit the new goals I have set.
Andrew Guida, fitness director, Saw Mill Club: Thanks for taking a chance on me. You are a true champion and a great motivator! I look forward to working with your amazing staff, whether it’s personal training with Mervyn and Jennie, or hitting my favorite exercise class, RDX (Results Driven Exercise).
Heidi Michaels, certified life coach, Saw Mill Club: You have been so much more to me than a life coach. Physically, it’s evident that I have changed, but without your guidance and coaching it would never have been possible. You challenged me to be the person I was always meant to be. You gave me the tools to clear away all the nonsense and challenged me to take my life back. I love that you never gave me a way to wiggle out of any goals that I set during the program. With your guidance and support, I completed my first 5K race. I can’t think of anyone else that I would have wanted beside me as I crossed the finish line.
Amy G. Peck, nutrition therapist and personal trainer, Saw Mill Club: Thank you for all the time and effort you dedicated to breaking all my bad habits with food. You also taught me that when it comes to food choices, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. I look forward to continuing working with you as I strive to meet my next set of goals.
Drs. Kenneth S. Magid, DDS and Sabrina B. Magid, DMD, Advanced Dentistry of Westchester: You both are true masters when it comes to dental work. My teeth are picture perfect! Not only is my smile truly amazing, but by widening my smile you have completely transformed my face. I also love that you have started treating my kids. It’s so rare to find a dental office like yours that is a one-stop shop for my entire family. I love your entire staff, and as a designer I have also enjoyed seeing you transform your office in Harrison. If you ever leave the dental field behind, you both have a design job with me!
Paulo Gregorio, Paulo’s Atelier Hair Salon: You have officially spoiled me! The hair and makeup has been so superb! Derrek Hawkins, you have given me the beautiful blond highlights that I always wanted. I love that you are so easy to work with and were always open to all of my color suggestions. Cecilia Ibanez did a great job cutting my hair into shape. The longer layers she gave me are so smooth and sexy! I also loved the makeup artist, Agata Psiuch. I would recommend her to all of my friends for any special occasion.
Daniele Churchill and Lori Land of Churchills of Mount Kisco: This is such a beautiful store with beautiful clothes. The owners, Daniele and Lori, are fantastic. They are so easy to work with and really get it! Lori really knows how to make you look your best. The styles she chose for me enhanced all the right parts. They have it all here—shoes, accessories, and, of course, stylish clothing for both women and men in all price ranges.
Landsberg Jewelers: I loved the pieces you selected for my big photo shoot. Brown diamonds and moonstones are my favorites!
Andrew Guida, fitness director, Saw Mill Club: Two months into the process I can honestly say I was not confident that Melissa would succeed. She was not consistently meeting the program’s basic requirements. She was fighting to be in control when she really needed to let go and let the Saw Mill Club’s “dream team” do their thing. Now, after five months, I am ecstatic with what Melissa has accomplished. She was a late bloomer, but she eventually learned to listen, work hard, and simply get the job done. The intent to succeed was always there; Melissa just needed to get past her hang-ups and out of her own way. Eventually she listened to us, as well as herself. I now see a new woman who “gets it” and enjoys exercise and a healthy way of life. I have no doubt that Melissa will continue to follow her established routines, because she has mastered the social and psychological component to exercise that is often overlooked. Too often, all of us just focus on the physical aspects of getting in shape. If we train the mind and the soul, the physiological results will follow. Maintaining consistency and drive is key for Melissa. She must not let go of her lifelong exercise goals.
Heidi Michaels, certified life and performance coach, Saw Mill Club: When Melissa started this program it was evident that her time management skills needed some adjustment. She was a busy mom with an interior design business, a big heart that was willing to do anything for her friends, and no system to stay on track. She was often late for appointments (when she remembered them at all), over-scheduled, stressed, and constantly running to get things done. My work with Melissa started with having her commit to writing her appointments in a daily planner and keeping it with her at all times. In addition, we worked on identifying other areas of her life where she needed to create clearer boundaries for herself. Melissa quickly saw the benefit of having clearer boundaries with time, food, and relationships. Melissa’s keen sense of design allowed us to begin “designing” what her new life would look like. She has a clear vision now of who she is, where she’s going, and what needs to happen to get there.
Mervyn and Jennie, personal trainers, Saw Mill Club: Mervyn: Melissa has been training for several months now. She has been guided and instructed in regards to goal setting, resistance, cardio training, nutrition, recovery and other relevant matters. All this knowledge has helped her with her “road map” to success and reaching her goals. She understands the guidance and tools given to her, and now she can put this knowledge into action, even without our help. She has made tremendous improvements, not only from the physical aspect, but also from the mental side.
Jennie: Melissa has come a long way since we met. We can all see the obvious exterior changes, but those of us who spent extended time with her got to see her interior changes as well. She has lost weight, gained strength and stamina, and truly adopted a lifestyle of health and fitness. She intends to continue training to maintain and surpass what this makeover has started.
Amy G. Peck, nutrition therapist and personal trainer, Saw Mill Club: I’m so proud of Melissa! Five months ago she walked into my office a defensive overeater ready for a fight with the “food police.” Now she is a happy, confident, and intuitive eater who knows how to take care of her gorgeous body. Initially, Melissa, like many people, assumed that a dietitian’s job is to take away all yummy foods, leaving her hungry and deprived. It took awhile for her to relax enough to hear my mantra of moderation. Now, all these months later, Melissa understands that her goal is progress, not perfection. If she eats well most of the time and exercises consistently, Melissa has room for special treats and drinks with the gang. Melissa’s most challenging obstacle to weight loss has been her busy social life, but she has learned how to be part of the fun without overdoing the calories. I am fully confident that the official end of the makeover is only the start for Melissa, and I’m thrilled she asked me to continue being her nutritionist going forward. Funniest moment: Getting a late-night photo emailed from Melissa, which showed only a close-up of her painted toenails and the numbers on her scale, as she hit a new low weight!
Kenneth S. Magid, D.D.S. and Sabrina B. Magid, D.M.D., Advanced Dentistry of Westchester: Melissa’s new smile is just dazzling. She took a photo with her big, beautiful smile at what looks like a party and posted it on our Advanced Dentistry of Westchester Facebook page with the caption, “Thanks Drs. Magid, I love my smile!” Before the makeover, Melissa’s smile wasn’t terrible, it just didn’t flatter her. When doing a dental cosmetic makeover, it’s not just about the teeth. Teeth don’t meet each other socially—faces do! Melissa’s previous smile did not “fit her face.” Melissa’s lips had a wide “anatomic smile” but her teeth gave her a narrow “dental smile.” This resulted in dark shadows called “corridors” at the corners of her mouth and made her smile look narrow and constricted. Her smile didn’t fill her face. But improving her smile didn’t mean simply enlarging it—even the shape of her teeth had to be harmonious with the shape of her face. Wide faces that are more round or ovoid in appearance should have teeth that are appropriately shaped. Melissa’s teeth were not the appropriate shape for her face, and that resulted in unattractive alignment and spaces. We used minimally invasive porcelain veneers to subtly change the shape of her teeth. The veneers allowed us to close the spaces and correctly align the teeth for an attractive, natural appearance. By subtly rounding the edges of the veneers and including the slight translucency at the edge, the final result is delicate and feminine. We used the porcelain veneers to widen her smile and get rid of the dark corridors at the side, allowing her dental smile to be wide and warm and welcoming. The shade we picked for the veneers was about three shades lighter than her teeth, but still very natural in appearance. In order to balance the color of the lower teeth, which did not need veneers, we lightened them, beginning with a Zoom Advanced in-office bleaching and continuing the process with custom tray home bleaching. Now when Melissa smiles, it balances perfectly and lights up her whole face.
Joseph J. Sozio, MD, SkinCentre physician, SkinCentre Advanced Medical Aesthetics: We met Melissa Marcogliese several months ago to evaluate her cosmetic concerns. Melissa is an energetic 39-year-old with some complexion problems that detracted from her appearance. She suffered from adult acne and facial hair. Some of her blemishes resulted from frequent plucking and waxing, leading to irritation, redness, and hyper-pigmentation. Melissa also had some mild wrinkles on her forehead and between the brows, a common issue at her age. Lastly, Melissa’s lips, though a pretty shape, lacked the fullness and definition she wanted. SkinCentre was extremely pleased to evaluate Melissa and provide her with aesthetic services designed to enhance her looks. First, I treated her with a series of SkinCentre’s advanced acne laser treatments to eliminate the pimples and give her skin a smooth appearance. She also received laser hair treatments that not only alleviated her unwanted facial hair but also eliminated the need for constant tweezing, therefore ameliorating the offending skin irritation. In addition, I administered injections of Dysport (the competitive product to Botox) to soften her fine lines and wrinkles and restore a more youthful look. Next, I gave Melissa a treatment with Juvederm, a well-known dermal filler, injected into the lips to give them more fullness. Finally, Melissa has received microdermabrasion and chemical peels to improve her skin’s tone and texture.
The final results are fantastic! Not only are the acne and blemishes virtually eliminated, but the tone and texture of Melissa’s skin is clear and dewy. The Dysport took care of the facial wrinkles. Melissa’s lip augmentation has further enhanced her appearance. The lip treatment, in combination with her dental work, has resulted in natural-looking, sexy lips and a bright smile. Melissa’s attractive appearance now matches her energy, positive attitude, and enthusiasm. She is literally glowing!
Paulo’s Atelier Hair Salon: When we first met Melissa she had a natural look with frizzy, short layers. She had a clean canvas from which it was easy to form a new style. Melissa was open to a dramatic change in her color, which our team of colorists—Paulo Gregorio, Derrek Hawkins, and Kathleen Troy—was inspired to create. During Melissa’s first visit, we executed a beautiful background color of a rich cinnamon brown to compliment her skin and eyes. Generous highlights framing her face were added to ignite shine and texture. Our stylists, Cecilia Ibanez and Cathy Young, removed the frizz with a Keratin Complex Therapy Treatment, which also sealed in shine and a healthy, smooth finish. This process brought Melissa’s look from an average, everyday style to a cool, contemporary, and very attractive look. After several color applications resulting in a rich, golden-brown foundation with ribbons of wheat and amber highlights, Melissa’s color looks amazing! Her layers filled in nicely, and Cecilia was able to achieve a trendier, livelier appearance. The exuberance Melissa brought to the table shaped her experience with us. Although the Paulo’s Atelier team is always keen to execute makeover looks, it is especially thrilling when the test subject is so open to the experience. We are not solely in this business to make runway models look even more glamorous. Our intention is to help our clients of all shapes, sizes, and cultures to feel exquisite.
